A Study of Requests Made by Negative Politeness in English Movies and Their Persian Subtitles

Based on Brown & Levinson’s politeness theory (1987), this paper sought to explore the negative sub-strategies in English and Persian requests by analyzing subtitles of each British American movie consisting Little Women (2019), The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015), Twilight (2008), New Moon (2009). aim was define frequency applied both languages cultural differences applying them. In addition, were studied based Newmark’s translation procedures (1988) employed strategies measure precision rendered utterances. Being fifty-one bulk, all kinds extracted from movies analyzed. study revealed that ‘State FTA as a general rule’, ‘Nominalize’, ‘Go record incurring debt’ absent languages. highest lowest belonged ‘Question/Hedge’ ‘Apologize’ respectively. sub-strategy ‘Impersonalize S H’ ‘Give deference’ far higher English. As translation, out sixteen procedures, eleven them used. ‘Literal Translation’, ‘Functional Equivalent’, ‘Reduction’ most frequently used strategies. Furthermore, subtitle an utterance not according context movie.
